Wilhelm Büchner University is Germany’s largest private university for technology – with more than 6,000 students. Founded in 1996, more than 300 students registered for the first course in computer science a year later. Today, Wilhelm Büchner University has four departments:

Unique Profile – Wilhelm Büchner
Wilhelm Büchner (1816–1892) completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist before studying chemistry in Heidelberg and Giessen with Justus von Liebig. In his parental home in Darmstadt he had already carried out first process experiments to create coloring agents that simplified the new production method for blue dye. In 1845 he established his „ultramarine factory“ in Pfungstadt. He also participated in international fairs and was one of those honored at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. His products were eventually delivered to almost all European countries as well as to customers in Asia and America. He quickly became a successful and prosperous entrepreneur who continued to carry out research and experiments throughout his life. Besides his passion for technology, innovation, uniqueness, and entrepreneurial spirit are attributes that describe Wilhelm Büchner and also define the university.
