Did you know that most public universities in Germany do not charge tuition fees? This is great news for international students, including those from Indonesia, as it allows you to pursue higher education in Germany without the burden of tuition costs. However, living expenses are still a necessary consideration. According to official estimates by the German government, Indonesian students need a minimum of 11,904 Euros per year (or approximately 992 Euros per month) to cover their living expenses in Germany. This amount is not merely a suggestion; it is a mandatory requirement! Why is this important? Because it is an essential criterion for obtaining a German student visa. Without demonstrating this financial capacity, your student visa application may be denied, hindering your plans to study in Germany.
So, how can you secure this required amount? There are several options, and one of the most advantageous is securing a scholarship from the DAAD. The good news is that Indonesian students are eligible for various DAAD scholarships! In this article, we will provide detailed information on the different funding opportunities available through the DAAD for Indonesian students, with a particular focus on DAAD scholarships for Master’s and Bachelor’s programs.
It is our goal to inform you honestly and accurately, therefore, we need to add a disclaimer:

Overview
The DAAD, or German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), is widely recognized as the largest scholarship provider for international students aiming to study in Germany.
Driven by the mission of "Change through Exchange," the DAAD not only facilitates German students in studying abroad but also opens doors for international students, including those from Indonesia, to pursue higher education in Germany. With its main office in Bonn and another in Berlin, the DAAD maintains a robust global presence. This includes a network of 20 Regional Offices and 37 Information Centers spread across nearly 50 countries. For Indonesian students, the DAAD Regional Office in Jakarta serves as a crucial resource.
The DAAD offers an extensive array of scholarships that cater to a wide range of academic levels—from undergraduate and graduate studies to PhD research and language courses. As of 2024, the DAAD supports 86 different scholarship programs, each with specific application processes and eligibility criteria. In this article, we will concentrate on the DAAD scholarships available to Indonesian students seeking Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Germany. These merit-based scholarships fully cover the living expenses for Indonesian students during their studies in Germany.

However, it's crucial to understand that not every DAAD scholarship is available to Indonesian applicants. As of 2024, there are 22 DAAD scholarships accessible to students from Indonesia, with 8 specifically tailored for those aiming to pursue a degree in Germany, excluding PhD programs. It's important to note that these scholarships are exclusively available at the Master's level. Below, we will detail these 8 scholarships along with key information. But before we get into that, let's explore the opportunities available for Indonesian undergraduate students.
Geeky Stuff Box

In 2023, an impressive total of 623 Indonesian students were granted DAAD funding across various scholarship categories. This underscores the strong academic connections between Germany and Indonesia, and the high esteem Indonesian students have for DAAD programs.

In-Country and In-Region DAAD Scholarships for Indonesians
Indonesian students can also complete their Master's degree with a DAAD scholarship through the following DAAD In-Country/In-Region Funding Programmes:
- In-Country/In-Region Scholarships Program at AIT
- In-Country/In-Region Scholarships Program at SEARCA FS
- In-Country/In-Region Scholarships Program at SEARCA NRM
In-Country/In-Region Scholarships Program at UGM
These scholarships enable Indonesians to study at the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, the University of the Philippines Los Baños, University Putra Malaysia, Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia, Kasetsart University in Thailand, or IPB University in Indonesia.
As you can understand from above, given DAAD programs do not support Master's studies in Germany. Instead, with these scholarships, Indonesians can study in Indonesia itself, or some other countries like Thailand, Philippines or Malaysia. This is exactly why we did not include these funding opportunities in Table 2.
DAAD Scholarship Indonesia: Requirements
As mentioned above, DAAD scholarships vary widely in terms of purpose, target group, eligibility criteria, application procedures, and much more. This also applies to DAAD scholarships for Indonesians, each of which has its own requirements and procedures. However, based on our research, we can outline the main requirements and eligibility criteria that Indonesian students are likely to encounter when applying for DAAD study scholarships.
List of DAAD requirements for Indonesia:
- Education gap: Your previous academic degree should not be older than six years at the application deadline. Note: DAAD typically does not impose any age limits.
- State of residence: You are ineligible if you have resided in Germany for more than 15 months by the application deadline.
- Language skills: Your proficiency in English and/or German should meet the requirements of your chosen study program in Germany.
- Academic performance: While not always explicitly stated, your GPA should be at least "GOOD," equivalent to a 2.5 in the German grading system.
IMPORTANT: To be eligible for a DAAD scholarship and study in Germany, you must also fulfill all the specific admission requirements of the study program you wish to enroll in. Therefore, in addition to checking the DAAD website, make sure you are fully informed about the details of the courses you plan to apply for.
Advice Box
Although not always explicitly required, a strong extracurricular portfolio (e.g. internships, volunteer work, project participation, training, etc.) can significantly improve your chances of obtaining a DAAD scholarship.
Application Documents
Now that you're familiar with the DAAD eligibility criteria, let's address a crucial question: What documents do Indonesian students need for their DAAD scholarship application? The answer varies due to the diversity of funding programs, but there are some common documents required across most DAAD scholarship applications.
DAAD checklist for Indonesia:
- Online application form: DAAD provides its own application form, which must be fully completed by the applicant. Don’t worry; it’s user-friendly and easy to follow.
- Educational certificates: This includes your Bachelor's degree and high school diploma.
- Transcript of records: If your transcript only lists individual grades without explaining the grading system, include a separate document explaining the grading system.
- Language certificates: Proof of your English (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL) and/or German (e.g., TestDaf, DSH) proficiency, typically not older than 2 years.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): A complete tabular CV/Resume with no unexplained gaps.
- Letter of Motivation: A convincing 1-3 page letter explaining why you deserve the funding.
- Letter of Recommendation: Also known as a reference letter, from a professor or employer.
Important considerations:
- Documents not in English or German require (certified) translations.
- Ensure your application is complete and properly formatted. Missing elements (even signatures) can lead to disqualification. Carefully check the specific requirements of your chosen scholarship program.
- You don't need an admission letter from a German university to apply for the DAAD scholarship. DAAD scholarships are typically pre-admission, meaning you apply for DAAD funding before applying to your desired Bachelor's or Master's program in Germany.
How to apply for a DAAD scholarship from Indonesia?
You might have guessed that there isn't one set of steps that applies to every DAAD scholarship. However, there are SEVEN key steps that Indonesian students need to know in order to apply for and win a DAAD scholarship.
DAAD Application Process for Indonesians:
- Find the scholarship: Start by visiting the DAAD scholarship database and use the website's filters to narrow down your scholarship options.
- Check eligibility: Once you've found a scholarship that aligns with your interests and goals, ensure you meet the basic formal requirements listed under "Application Requirements" on the DAAD database.
- Collect the documents: Refer to the "Application Procedure" section in the DAAD database for a list of required documents. Important: Certify and translate the documents as needed.
- Submit the application: Most applications are submitted online via the DAAD portal. However, some scholarships may have diverse submission procedures, such as requiring direct application to the academic program (e.g., Helmut-Schmidt Scholarship).
- Wait for the response from DAAD: This can take several months. If your first-stage application is successful, DAAD will contact you and invite you to the second stage of the application process.
- Complete the second stage: The second stage varies depending on the scholarship. For instance, it may involve an interview (e.g., Study Scholarships for STEM disciplines) or the submission of additional documents.
- Wait for the final results: After completing the second stage, it may take a few months for DAAD to finalize the list of selected scholarship recipients. They will then inform you whether you have been awarded the scholarship.
Selection Criteria
Understanding the selection criteria and the selection process is essential for optimising your application and setting realistic goals. Below are the DAAD's main selection criteria for Indonesian students:
- Grade Point Average (GPA): Outstanding academic performance can significantly boost your chances of being awarded the scholarship.
- Motivation: Your letter of motivation is a critical part of your application, so invest time and effort in crafting it well.
- Extracurricular Involvement: Use your CV to highlight practical experiences such as workshops, training, publications, and other achievements that demonstrate your commitment and skills.
While every component of your application is important, excelling in these areas can greatly increase your chances of success.
DAAD Scholarship Indonesia: Deadline & When to Apply
Indonesian students should apply for the DAAD funding as soon as possible!
For Indonesian students eyeing DAAD scholarships, it's important to note that deadlines vary depending on the specific scholarship program. Hence, it's crucial to regularly check the relevant program pages for the most up-to-date information. PRO TIP: In most cases, DAAD deadlines for Indonesians fall during the autumn months.
To avoid any last-minute rush, it’s highly advisable to kick off your DAAD application preparations at least 2 months before the deadline. This buffer period will allow you ample time to gather, review, and organize all the required documents, ensuring everything is in perfect order well before submission.
As previously mentioned, the DAAD scholarship application process for Indonesian students is extensive, with a total DAAD processing time of around 6 months. If you account for at least 1 month of preparation time, you should plan for a total of around 7 months dedicated to the entire application process. Careful and early planning is key to starting your studies in Germany on schedule with a DAAD scholarship.
For instance, if you’re aiming to begin your Master’s program in Germany with a DAAD scholarship by October 2026, you should ideally begin your application process in August 2025. This means that preparation for studying in Germany should start more than a year before you actually commence your studies.
Is it hard to win a DAAD scholarship?
It is not easy to secure a DAAD scholarship, no matter where you’re from. This is largely due to its status as one of the most competitive and prestigious scholarships available in Germany. Based on our 2023 research, the acceptance rate for DAAD scholarships among Indonesians is around 10%. In simpler terms, only about 10 out of every 100 Indonesian applicants manage to win the scholarship, meaning the rejection rate stands at roughly 90%. A below-average GPA and a weak academic profile are often significant factors contributing to these rejections.
In short, even if you meet all the DAAD basic criteria and follow the application process to the letter, your DAAD scholarship application may still be declined if, for instance, your GPA is not up to par, your CV lacks substantial achievements, or your motivation letter fails to make a strong impression. Thus, getting a DAAD scholarship is quite a competitive process for Indonesian students.
DAAD Indonesia: Contact
As noted above, DAAD has a representation in Indonesia. To be more specific, there is a DAAD Regional Office located in Jakarta, which is also responsible for Singapore, Malaysia and East Timor. Besides, there are also "DAAD Lektors" in Indonesia, who can provide Indonesian students with valuable information about studying and scholarships in Germany. We highly recommend reaching out to the DAAD representatives in Indonesia if you have any questions or need personalized information. Below are the contact details for the Jakarta Regional Office:
