Greifswald: State Exam programs with Admission Restriction — Numerus Clausus/NC (2026/27)

Greifswald offers international students a distinctive educational experience at one of Germany's oldest universities, founded in 1456 and still shaping this charming Hanseatic city on the Baltic coast nearly six centuries later. The university excels particularly in medicine, physics, and marine sciences—fields that draw directly on the coastal location and proximity to research institutions like the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology—while students make up nearly a quarter of the population, giving academic life a defining presence in daily rhythms. The beautifully preserved medieval centre, with its distinctive brick Gothic churches, colourful gabled houses around the market square, and picturesque Museumshafen filled with historic sailing vessels, creates an inspiring backdrop that feels genuinely lived-in rather than museum-like. Greifswald's compact, bicycle-friendly layout means everything sits within minutes of everything else, fostering the kind of spontaneous encounters and tight-knit community that larger cities rarely offer.
