Theatre Studies: Top Study Programs in Germany (2026/27)

Theatre Studies programs in Germany offer international students an unparalleled immersion into one of the world’s most dynamic theatrical landscapes, where over 140 publicly funded theaters sustain centuries-old repertory traditions alongside bold contemporary experimentation. English-taught degrees in “Theaterwissenschaft” combine rigorous performance theory with practical creation, enabling students to explore German Expressionist staging, study Brecht’s alienation effect in action, engage with Regietheater reinterpretations, and analyze politically engaged productions from Berlin’s Volksbühne to refugee theater projects. Partnerships with institutions such as the Berliner Ensemble, Theater der Welt, and major state theaters provide backstage access, internships, and dramaturgy assistantships, while coursework spans theater history, performance analysis, cultural policy, and emerging areas like virtual reality performance.
