Carl Benz School: List of all tuition-free study programs (2026/27)

Carl Benz School of Engineering, established in 1999, is a college within Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) offering an English-taught Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering to approximately 600 international students. This specialized unit within KIT—itself one of Germany's elite technical universities formed from the 2009 merger of University of Karlsruhe and Karlsruhe Research Center—provides a unique English-language pathway into German engineering education, charging higher fees than standard German programs but substantially lower than private institutions while maintaining KIT's academic standards. Located in Karlsruhe (310,000 residents) in Baden-Württemberg near the French border, the program operates within KIT's extensive facilities including state-of-the-art laboratories and research centers, with living costs averaging €700-900 monthly in this technology hub hosting numerous engineering firms and IT companies. The three-year bachelor's program follows standard mechanical engineering curriculum entirely in English, eliminating German language barriers for international students, though this English-bubble approach may limit integration with the broader KIT community of 25,000 students and local industry where German remains dominant.
