Located on the grounds of Europe's oldest large-scale film studio, where productions ranging from Metropolis to recent Hollywood films were shot, students have access to professional facilities, including sound stages, post-production suites, and equipment that is typically unavailable at general universities. However, the competitive environment and project-based learning, which requires 60+ hour weeks, can be intense. As a public university that charges standard semester fees of around €300, the main financial challenges are Potsdam's rising living costs of €700–1,000 per month and project expenses that often exceed the provided budgets. Most programs are conducted in German and require C1 proficiency, though some master's programs accept international students with a B2 level. The intimate size enables close mentorship from industry professionals and collaborative projects with Babelsberg Studios, UFA, and regional broadcasters. However, career prospects remain highly competitive. While successful graduates like Andreas Dresen and Katja Benrath have achieved prominence, many alumni combine freelance film work with television, advertising, or teaching to maintain a stable income in Germany's subsidized but limited film industry, which is dominated by public broadcasting funding.
