Duisburg offers international students a unique academic experience at the University of Duisburg-Essen, one of Germany's largest universities, with particular strengths in engineering, logistics, nanotechnology, and one of Europe's leading programmes in East Asian studies. As home to the continent's largest inland port—where massive container ships navigate the Rhine daily—the city provides unmatched research and career opportunities in global supply chain management, logistics innovation, and international trade, connecting classroom theory directly to real-world industry. The university boasts one of the most diverse student populations in Germany, fostering a genuinely multicultural environment where international students find their footing quickly among peers from over 130 countries. Duisburg itself reflects this diversity, shaped by generations of migration and industrial history that give it an unpretentious, authentic character distinct from polished tourist destinations.

Most Selective Study Programs in Duisburg

For degree courses with a numerus clausus, part of the study places are allocated according to the grade point average (GPA) of the previous degree. Selection is generally based on how many applicants apply for a place. The higher the grade, the more difficult it is to get onto the course. The German grading system ranges from 1.0 (very good) to 6.0 (unsatisfactory).
