Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin
Founded in 1710, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is the largest university hospital in Europe. It operates as the joint medical school of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Charité educates approximately 8,000 students in medicine, dentistry, and health sciences at its four Berlin campuses. This prestigious institution, where Nobel laureates Robert Koch and Rudolf Virchow pioneered modern medicine, consistently ranks among the top three medical schools in Germany, alongside Heidelberg University and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Charité offers the standard six-year Staatsexamen program in medicine, and admission is highly competitive, with an NC score range of 1.0–1.2. As a public institution, Charité only charges the standard semester fee of around €320, while providing access to over 100 clinics and institutes, as well as 3,000 hospital beds, for clinical training. The university offers extensive research opportunities in fields such as neuroscience, immunology, and personalized medicine through its partnerships with the Max Planck and Helmholtz institutes. The modular curriculum includes early patient contact beginning in the first semester, integrated clinical and theoretical teaching, and the option of research tracks or international rotations through Erasmus partnerships. Instruction is primarily in German, requiring C2 proficiency for patient interaction. The school has locations throughout Berlin, including the historic Campus Mitte in the city center, Campus Virchow-Klinikum in Wedding, and Campus Benjamin Franklin in Steglitz. Students benefit from relatively affordable living costs in a major European capital while gaining clinical experience with Germany's most diverse patient population. However, competition for student housing and clinical placements remains intense given Berlin's popularity among international medical students.
