Study Empirical Linguistics in Germany (2026/27)

Overview Deadlines

Germany offers an outstanding environment for studying Empirical Linguistics, combining a distinguished tradition in language science with cutting-edge computational and experimental methods. German universities have long been at the forefront of linguistic research, and today's programs emphasize data-driven approaches—corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, phonetic analysis, computational modeling, and statistical methods—that allow students to investigate how language is structured, acquired, processed, and used in real-world contexts. Students benefit from access to extensive linguistic corpora, eye-tracking laboratories, speech analysis facilities, and computational resources that enable rigorous empirical investigation.

Numerus Clausus (Admission Restriction)

For degree courses with a numerus clausus, part of the study places are allocated according to the grade point average (GPA) of the previous degree. Selection is generally based on how many applicants apply for a place. The higher the grade, the more difficult it is to get onto the course. The German grading system ranges from 1.0 (very good) to 6.0 (unsatisfactory).
