About the University

The Hannover Medical School (MHH) is a renowned public medical university founded in 1965. As the only independent medical university in Germany, MHH has grown to accommodate more than 3,400 students. Located in the vibrant city of Hannover, Lower Saxony, the university's campus covers an impressive area of over 400,000 square metres, creating a dynamic environment for learning and research. MHH offers a comprehensive range of academic programmes focusing on medicine, dentistry, biochemistry, biomedicine, midwifery and health sciences. The university is particularly known for its innovative and patient-centred approach to medical education, exemplified by the HannibaL model study programme, which emphasises early patient contact and an integrated curriculum. Furthermore, MHH is home to the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS), an interdisciplinary graduate school that attracts postgraduate students and scientists from around the world.

MHH is recognised for its excellence in research, and has established itself as a leading institution in a number of medical fields, with transplantation and stem cell research among its key areas of expertise. The university's commitment to excellence is reflected in its ability to attract significant external funding, in excess of €82 million per year. MHH is consistently ranked among the top medical universities in Germany and has been included in international rankings such as the QS World University Rankings by Subject. The university's commitment to advancing medical knowledge and patient care is further demonstrated by its status as Germany's largest transplant centre, with 423 organ transplants performed in 2012 alone. Notable MHH alumni and faculty members include esteemed researchers, physicians and scientists who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. The university's commitment to fostering international collaboration and addressing global health challenges sets it apart, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded, globally-focused medical education.
