The university offers programs in engineering, computer science, business information systems, digital media, and health sciences. It has specialized degrees in areas such as microsystems engineering and medical engineering, reflecting the region's heritage of precision manufacturing. However, most bachelor's programs require B2-C1 German proficiency, and English-taught options are primarily at the master's level, including the International Engineering program. The university is located in southwestern Germany, near the Swiss border and approximately two hours from Stuttgart and Zurich. It operates in small-town settings, offering living costs around €600–750 per month, but with limited urban amenities. Students must adapt to the isolation of the Black Forest, particularly at the main Furtwangen campus, which is located at an elevation of 850 meters and has long winters. HFU's regional industry connections include partnerships with Black Forest manufacturing companies, medical technology firms in Tuttlingen (Germany's medical device capital), and precision engineering companies. These partnerships provide internship opportunities, primarily with SMEs rather than major corporations. HFU's small enrollment enables close contact with professors and hands-on laboratory work. The distributed campus structure provides different experiences: Furtwangen offers traditional small-town student life; Villingen-Schwenningen provides more urban amenities; and Tuttlingen focuses on medical technology. HFU is suitable for students seeking an affordable technical education in a scenic but remote setting who can manage without metropolitan cultural offerings or extensive international communities.
