Saarland University: List of all tuition-free study programs (2026/27)

Saarland University is a research-focused public university in Saarbrücken, set in green surroundings right next to the French border. With around 17,000 students from more than 120 nations, it combines a strong international culture with short distances and a close-knit campus where research and teaching sit side by side.

A few things make studying here distinctive:

• A truly international, multilingual setting. Located in the heart of Europe on the French border, the university teaches in German, French, and English and offers a wide range of cross-border programs with partner universities, giving students the chance to earn double degrees and gain real international experience.
• Strong across many disciplines. Six faculties span the natural and engineering sciences, computer science, medicine, law and economics, and the humanities and social sciences—so students find both breadth and depth, plus room for interdisciplinary work across fields.
• A campus built around research. Numerous renowned institutes sit directly on or next to the campus, including several Max Planck Institutes, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Leibniz Institute for New Materials, and Fraunhofer institutes—bringing leading research within walking distance.
• Hands-on involvement from early on. Across subjects, students get involved in real projects and research early, working within research groups, institutes, or alongside partners at home and abroad.
• A campus that cares about wellbeing. Saarland University holds the FISU Healthy Campus Label in Platinum—the highest level of this international quality mark and one of only nine universities in Germany to earn it. Through its "fit4more" program, students benefit from sports, fitness, and support for physical and mental health right on campus, at very student-friendly prices.
• Notable minds across many fields. The university's graduates and researchers have made their mark well beyond the campus—from ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer, who studied materials science here and ran experiments aboard the International Space Station, to figures such as former German Federal Minister Peter Altmaier in politics, Federal Constitutional Court Vice-President Winfried Hassemer in law, and economist Peter Bofinger.

With its European location, multilingual environment, and a campus where leading institutes are just a short walk away, Saarland University offers students from every discipline an environment where curiosity quickly turns into real experience.
