About the University
The University of Trier, officially known as the University of Trier, is a public university located in the historic city of Trier, Germany. It was founded in 1473 and has a rich history dating back to the late Middle Ages. However, the university was closed in 1798 during the French occupation and re-established in 1970, making it one of the more recent universities in Germany. Despite its relatively recent re-establishment, the University of Trier has grown rapidly and is expected to have more than 12,000 students. Its main campus is located on the heights of Tarforst, with beautiful views over the city. Trier itself is known for its Roman heritage, and the campus is close to several historical landmarks, including the Porta Nigra, an ancient Roman city gate. The campus offers a combination of modern facilities and a picturesque setting, providing students with an inspiring environment for learning and personal development. The University of Trier offers a wide range of academic programmes in six faculties, including humanities, social sciences, economics, law, mathematics and environmental sciences. It is particularly renowned for its focus on European and international studies, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and teaching. The university's proximity to the borders of Luxembourg, France and Belgium further enhances its international character and facilitates cross-border collaboration.
In national ranking lists, such as the CHE University Ranking 2022, the University of Trier has consistently performed well in various subjects, particularly in the fields of business administration, economics and law. The university's commitment to academic excellence and innovative research has earned it a reputation as a leading institution in the region. Notable alumni of the University include influential figures in politics, business and academia, such as the former Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the German philosopher and sociologist Hartmut Rosa. These distinguished alumni demonstrate the University's ability to nurture talent and contribute to various sectors of society. A distinctive aspect of the University of Trier is its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The University has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, including promoting sustainable transport and optimising energy efficiency on campus.
