Astrophysics Numerus Clausus

Astrophysics Programs in Germany with Admission Restriction - Numerus Clausus/NC (2026/27)

Overview Deadlines

Germany offers international students an outstanding environment to study Astrophysics, combining rigorous scientific training with access to world-class research facilities in a country that plays a central role in European space science. Programs at leading universities and research centers—often connected to institutions like the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, the European Southern Observatory, and the German Aerospace Center (DLR)—equip students with deep knowledge of classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, statistical physics, and advanced mathematics, applying these principles to the study of stars, planets, galaxies, black holes, and the evolution of the universe. Courses integrate theoretical modeling, computational simulations, and observational methods, giving students hands-on experience with telescope data, spectroscopic analysis, and high-performance computing for large-scale astrophysical datasets.

Most Selective Astrophysics Programs

For degree courses with a numerus clausus, part of the study places are allocated according to the grade point average (GPA) of the previous degree. Selection is generally based on how many applicants apply for a place. The higher the grade, the more difficult it is to get onto the course. The German grading system ranges from 1.0 (very good) to 6.0 (unsatisfactory).

Astrophysics NC: Glossary

Numerus Clausus (NC)
This Latin term means “limited number” and indicates that a program has restricted admission. In other words, not all applicants can be accepted, so selection is usually based on grades or other criteria when demand exceeds available spots.
