English-taught Byzantine Studies Programs in Germany without tuition fees (2026/27)

Germany offers international students a unique opportunity to study Byzantine Studies in one of Europe’s leading centers for this specialized field, combining rigorous philological traditions with interdisciplinary approaches to the thousand-year history of the Byzantine Empire and its influence on Europe, the Middle East, and the Slavic world. Programs at institutions such as LMU Munich, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and the University of Cologne provide training in Greek paleography, Byzantine history, art history, sigillography, and numismatics, supported by extensive manuscript collections, photographic archives, and digital databases. Students benefit from Germany’s strong ties to international research projects and archaeological excavations in Greece, Turkey, and the Balkans, as well as collaborations with museums and institutes like the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum.
