English-taught Comparative Literature Programs in Germany without Admission Restriction / NC-Free (2026/27)

Germany is an outstanding destination for Comparative Literature, home to a tradition that shaped the field from Goethe’s concept of Weltliteratur to contemporary literary theory. Prestigious institutions such as the Peter Szondi Institute in Berlin and LMU Munich offer rigorous programs combining literary theory, translation studies, and cultural analysis across multiple languages, while English-taught curricula with multilingual seminars emphasize both classical philological depth and modern approaches including postcolonial studies, digital humanities, and intermediality. Germany’s central European location and multilingual environment create ideal conditions for comparative research, supported by world-class libraries, archives, and access to European literary networks like Erasmus Mundus.
