Southeast Asian Studies: Top International Study Programs in Germany (2026/2027)

Germany offers international students a unique perspective for pursuing Southeast Asian Studies, combining rigorous academic training with the country’s role as Europe’s gateway to ASEAN markets, where bilateral trade now exceeds €180 billion annually. Renowned programs at institutions such as Humboldt University Berlin’s Department of Southeast Asian Studies, the University of Hamburg’s Asia-Africa Institute, and Goethe University Frankfurt provide comprehensive curricula that integrate language training in Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese with interdisciplinary study of the region’s history, anthropology, political economy, and contemporary development issues. Germany’s strong economic ties to Southeast Asia, through companies like Siemens, BASF, and Volkswagen operating across ASEAN, create valuable contexts for linking academic knowledge with real-world dynamics.
