Located in the heart of Europe in the dynamic metropolitan region of the Ruhrgebiet, RUB with its 20 faculties is home to over 43,000 students from over 130 countries.

Scientific focus
Research at RUB is characterised by interdisciplinary collaboration and networking. Researchers at RUB pursue interdisciplinary research projects in nine Research Departments. In the process, they overcome the boundaries between different disciplines and strengthen knowledge exchange at RUB and beyond, with external partners within University Alliance Ruhr and among universities in Germany and abroad. Excellent infrastructure
Competing against other German institutions who are likewise striving to establish research infrastructures of national relevance, RUB has acquired grants for four new research buildings to date. They provide optimal conditions for state-of-the-art research:
ZEMOS – Centre for Molecular Spectroscopy and Simulation of Solvent-directed Processes
ZGH – Center for Interface-Dominated High-Performance Materials
ProDi – Centre for Molecular Protein Diagnostics
ZESS – Centre for Engineering of Smart Product Service Systems

Funded excellence
By helping its researchers find funding, RUB has contributed to an increase of the number of ERC projects (European Research Council) to eleven ERC Grants in total.
Numerous successful joint research projects – including eleven Collaborative Research Centres, eight research groups and five DFG Research Training Groups – raise the research profile.

Supporting early career researchers
RUB is deeply committed to supporting early career researchers. The aim is to give them a platform where they can develop their skills and carry out independent research early in their career. The university offers the best possible assistance in this regard. With a Research School open to all PhD students, with numerous Research Training Groups, with currently 15 junior research groups, with the tenure-track programme, the new open-field programme and RUB Career Track, the university provides attractive career perspectives for talents at all career stages.
