Plasma Physics: List of all English-taught study programs in Germany (2026/2027)

Studying Plasma Physics in Germany means entering one of the most intellectually ambitious and practically consequential fields in modern science — combining rigorous training in electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, quantum mechanics, and statistical physics with direct engagement in research that stretches from the interior of fusion reactors to the edges of the observable universe. You'll develop a deep understanding of the fourth state of matter, learning to model and manipulate ionized gases that behave according to some of the most complex and beautiful equations in physics, with applications spanning nuclear fusion energy, space propulsion, semiconductor manufacturing, medical plasma technology, and astrophysical simulation. Germany sits at the center of global plasma research in a way few countries can match — home to the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald, a major partner in the ITER fusion project, and host to a research community that consistently operates at the frontier of both experimental and theoretical plasma science.

Graduates are well-positioned for careers in fusion energy research, space and aerospace technology, industrial plasma applications, scientific computing, and academic research — in a field that carries the long-term promise of virtually limitless clean energy and the immediate reality of being one of the most technically demanding and intellectually rewarding disciplines a physicist can choose.
