About the University

The Stuttgart Media University, also known as Hochschule der Medien (HdM), is a public university of applied sciences in Stuttgart, Germany. Founded in 2001 through the merger of the former University of Printing and Media and the University of Library and Information Science, the HdM has a rich history dating back to 1853, when the School for the Book Printing Trade was founded.

With around 5,000 students, the HdM offers a wide range of media-related programmes in its three faculties: Print and Media, Electronic Media and Information and Communication. The university is renowned for its specialist courses in areas such as audiovisual media, printing and packaging technology, computer science and media, and information design.

HdM's urban campus is located in the vibrant city of Stuttgart, with nearby attractions such as the Rotwildpark, Bärenseen and Bärenschlössle providing students with a connection to nature. The city centre, with its vibrant nightlife and cultural offerings, is only a short distance away.

The university has a strong focus on practical, hands-on learning and maintains close ties with the media industry, offering students opportunities for internships and collaborations with renowned companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Bosch. The HdM also encourages entrepreneurship through its Start-Up Centre, which helps students set up their own businesses.

Notable alumni of the HdM and its predecessor institutions include Arek Gielnik, producer of the award-winning documentary Neukölln Unlimited, and Jörn Grosshans, winner of a Hollywood Post Alliance Award for his visual effects work on Game of Thrones. With a focus on innovation, creativity and practical experience, the Stuttgart Media University prepares students for successful careers in the ever-evolving media landscape.
